Psalm 83

The Cause of the Psalm -

Enemies had made a league to destroy Israel

Who are these enemies? All of the regular enemies of Israel are named:

• Edom - They despised the birthright and despised Israel
• Ishmaelites - An old grudge between Isaac and Ishmael
• Moab - born in incest; constant feud with Israel
• Hagarenes - maybe descendents of Hagar and a second husband?
• Gebal (Probably close to Edom)
• Ammon
• Amalek (Amalekites)
• Philistines
• Tyre and Sidon (Lebanon)
• Assur

The Call of Psalm

Take care of them like You did in times gone by: The Midianites - by Gideon in Judges 7 Sisera - Jael Jabin (Barak) - Judges 4 Oreb and Zeeb (Midianite leaders who tried to defeat Gideon and were killed on a rock and on a winepress)

Get them good: Like a wheel - give them no rest Like stubble before the wind - blow them around in confusion Like a fire burneth a wood - burn them up like a forest fire.

The Purpose of the call

• That they might seek thy name
• That men might know that God is God.
